Mermaid Avenue Preview
Hood's next production will be a unique blend of music and improvisation. Theatre Director Joe Brady is preparing an original production that will draw inspiration from Billy Bragg and Wilco's 1998 collaboration "Mermaid Avenue."
The popular modern folk acts used previously unheard lyrics by Woody Guthrie to create a Grammy nominated album, which they named after the folk legend's home street. It also features vocal performances by Natalie Merchant.
The play's script will be developed over a five to six week rehearsal period, during which student actors will work closely with Brady. Auditions for the new production were held on the 19th and a cast of about ten will be featured.
Guthrie's legendary lyrics were donated to Billy Bragg and Wilco by his daughter, Nora. The contemporary artists worked to modernize Guthrie's message and present it to a younger audience. This collection of lyrics had never before been recorded with music, or perhaps even played outside of Guthrie's head.
Hood College Theatre's rendition of the album is set to debut this Spring.
