Edge of Darkness
Jarred Braxton
Based on a 1985 BBC miniseries about a homicide detective who investigates his daughter's death, Director Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale,") and Mel Gibson ("Braveheart," "Lethal Weapon,") take audiences to the, "Edge of Darkness."
Gibson plays Boston homicide detective Thomas Craven, who has just welcomed his daughter Emma, back home from her internship.
Upon her homecoming, Emma is severely ill and as she is about to reveal something to her father, Emma is shot right in front of him.
After his daughter's death, Craven is desperate for answers and for revenge.
Craven looks into his daughter's death with the assistance of the mysterious Jedbergh, played by Ray Windstone ("Beowulf") whose job is to clean up after crimes in order to leave them unsolved.
As Craven digs deeper into his daughter's murder, he begins to unravel why she has hardly made contact with him during her internship, and he unearths a corporate conspiracy revolving around nuclear weapons.
Despite its many twists and turns, "Edge of Darkness," is a great action movie that delivers many thrills, shocks, and is intelligently well told.
Mel Gibson gives a solid performance in this movie, while the remaining actors and characters are so-so because their roles and purposes are so small and insignificant they hardly contribute.
The true star of the movie is not even in the movie. The driving force behind "Edge of Darkness," is director Martin Campbell.
This movie demonstrated how great of a director Campbell really is. He used this movie to show-off how easily and quickly he could turn up the intensity when the moment called for it.
He took a smart script and amplified what needed to be amplified.
However, there were many flaws throughout "Edge of Darkness," for instance there are moments when the audience would be left behind. The story was intelligent, but too intelligent to keep up with.
Also, the scenes where Craven is hearing his daughter's voice throughout the movie and having flashbacks to when she was a little girl were truly confusing because it is unclear whether the flashbacks and voices are signs of insanity or ways of keeping his sanity intact.
Finally, a movie like this is good but not great enough to be worth remembering. It is a typical story about revenge and Mel Gibson has done movies about revenge before, so this isn't anything new.
"Edge of Darkness," will have moviegoers on the edge of their seats in the theater, but when they step out they will most likely forget about it.
In short, it makes for a good rental on the weekends.
