Sara Winand, or MC Diabeats, is Hood College's resident nerdcore rapper. Despite a fairly recent break into the nerdcore scene, MC Diabeats has already performed at Hood College and in Baltimore . Winand began rapping when one of her housemates introduced her to nerdcore, a genre of hip hop that contains pop culture nerd references, and her background in writing aided the lyrical process.

Generally, Winand says her lyrics begin as poetry, which she then transforms into the nerdcore style. She finds inspiration in life experiences, underground pop culture, literature, and video games.

"I still use literary devices like alliteration, personification, extended metaphors and assonance in my lyrics, which helps me connect the writer to the rapper", Winand said.

As MC Diabeats, she entered the Versus Mode competition. The winner will be signed to the Scrub Club label. Out of fourteen competitors, Winand currently holds fourth place.

"I'm waiting on the judges ruling, and I don't want to count my chickens before they hatch," she said, "but if I make it, I'll be traveling to Pensacola, FL to compete against the other two finalists by performing a show at an event called "Nerd Invasion."

Winand's most recent collaboration is with a Nerdcore group from Seattle, Washington called "The Bloodclan." Their newest project is a concept album based on "Vampire: The Masquerade," called "Amor Sanguinis."

Winand has also individually compiled seven songs for a future album release.

"Hopefully by the end of this year I'll have an EP of my individual songs put together," said Winand.

Be on the lookout for this uniquely talented Hood student's future releases and collaborations.
