There was a strong sense of unity in the crowd as it moved through the streets of downtown Frederick. Scott's message that helping the poor is a consistent theme throughout all religions went from a statement to a reality, as people of all different faiths gathered together for a common purpose. For example, a young girl representing the Islamic Society of Frederick gave the prayer at one location.
One man at the prayer walk spoke somewhat bitterly of the way the homeless are neglected in Frederick.
"It's all red tape and paperwork," he replied. Implying that real progress is impossible without genuine compassion, he said, "Help starts at home," and gestured to his heart.
The prayer walk, unquestionably a meaningful and symbolic event, should be viewed as a beginning. There is so much that can and needs to be done to help people who are suffering. As Scott noted in his chapel message, "The time of need has never been greater than now." By combining the spirit of compassion with real action, help can be brought to those who are in need.
