Honey for the Heart
The?Secret?Life Of Bees
Riana Ferleman
Issue date: 12/8/08 Section: Entertainment
The Secret Life of Bees was originally a novel written by Sue Monk Kidd. While the movie adaptation is warm-hearted and honey filled, it does not quite do the book justice.
Directing and screenplay, done by Gina Prince-Blythewood, was so-so.
The book/movie is about a 14 year old girl named Lily (Dakota Fanning) who loses her mother in a tragic accident. Her father, full of inner turmoil, doesn't know how to relate to his growing daughter, so he makes her kneel on grits for hours on end. This causes Lily to run away and bust, Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson) her nanny, out of jail. They run away to a small town and meet three amazing queens of the honeycomb. Named August (Queen Latifah), June (Alicia Keys) and May (Sophie Okonedo, Hotel Rwanda).
The Secret Life of Bees, produced by Jada Pinkett Smith and rated PG-13, lacked the vocal performance that one would expect from such a cast. The only major musical display was by Alicia Keys who, in the movie, traded her piano for a well-mastered cello.
This chick flick will hook you whether you like it or not, so gather your mothers, sisters, and friends and watch.
