Tom Dickman, the most successful public high school basketball coach in Md. history, will begin his new positions as men's basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Hood College at the start of the 2003-2004 academic year.
Dickman, the head basketball coach at Frederick's Governor Thomas Johnson High School for 29 years, will be Hood's first men's basketball coach, as Hood embarks on its first year as a coed institution.
"It's a challenge," Dickman said of his new positions at Hood and of leaving his current job at TJ High School. He said that he has talked to many of his colleagues who have been in similar transitional positions.
When making his decision to come to Hood, Dickman spoke with Gib Romaine, athletics director; Olivia White, dean of students; and President Ronald J. Volpe.
"I've been very comfortable in my job at TJ and I wasn't looking for another job," Dickman said, "but the more I talked to those three people in particular, I could see they really had a plan that this was going to be good, not only for men's basketball but for the college in general."
Dickman accepted the positions offered to him in late December of last year and has since been busy recruiting for his team at Hood.
"It's been hectic for me recently because I've been doing two jobs at once, but [by] the same token, I'm learning as I go," Dickman said.
He currently has a list of 25 interested players and has already scheduled 19 games.
"We're not in a conference so consequently it's hard finding games," Dickman said. "We need to find a conference to be in and I think that will come, but I'm looking at the big picture here. A year from now things will be different and better; two years from now, it will be different and better; five years from now it will be different and better; and I'm in it for the long haul."
As assistant athletic director, Dickman will be working closely with Romaine to bring new athletic programs to the Hood campus. They plan to start new programs for men's soccer and lacrosse as well as better intramural team programs.
