Good evening my sweets, and welcome to Emily's pit of eternal chaos (also known as my dorm room during midterm time). I've been procrastinating, er, I mean cooking up some trouble down here in the lab, trying to find some spooky flicks for your viewing enjoyment this Halloween. After consulting my crystal ball (and asking a few friends), I have devised a most deliciously evil list of ten movies, in no particular order, that are guaranteed to make you run for the little boys’ and ghouls’ rooms. Watch if you dare.
1. The Birds(1963)-Made back in the classic days of Hollywood, Alfred Hitchcock's tale of birds gone crazy is a surprisingly spooky flick. Complete with bloody bodies and terrified townspeople, The Birds will make you think twice about the ducks in Baker Park. (Emily's crazy finding-Hitchcock actually attached live birds to actress Tippi Hedren in the movie.)
2. Poltergeist(1982)-The film that spawned the catch phrase, "They're heeeeeeere!" This lovely package includes a haunted house, coffins that pop out of the ground, ghosts that live in mirrors, and a good old-fashioned battle of good vs. evil. Believe me, after seeing this one you will be freaked out about looking in your mirror!
3. Psycho(1960)-Anyone care to stay at the Bates Motel? For some reason they always seem to have a room open. Maybe it is because poor Norman Bates seems to be having troubles with his mother. Made famous by the gruesome shower scene, this fright flick has become synonymous with Halloween and is so popular that it was re-made in 1992. However, I strongly suggest you see the original.
4. House on Haunted Hill(1958/1999)-This is another re-made package. The first one is a little lame, but features that Sovereign of Spirits Vincent Price (swoon). The remake is definitely a nightmare generator. Set in an abandoned insane asylum (which happens to have been the scene of a horrific mass murder spree), rich theme park owner Steven Price invites five people to participate in a twisted party. Each guest will receive one million dollars if they stay locked in the asylum until morning. But how many survive? Sound spooky? I only lasted five minutes in the theaters watching this one.
